The goal of our research is to build highly responsive intelligent information systems to provide pervasive information services all the time, everywhere, on all varieties of data. The main research areas include data & knowledge base systems for information management, cloud computing and big data systems for high availability and scalability, mobile & pervasive computing for pervasive access, parallel & distributed processing for effective and real-time performance, artificial intelligence techniques for intelligent responses. We have identified key enabling technologies among these fields as the building blocks for our research goal. In particular, mobile and cloud data management, big data analytics, dynamic coordination techniques, service oriented architecture, as well as the universal access and personalization technologies are the foundations for providing advanced and ubiquitous information services to clients all the time, everywhere, by any means. Mobile data management, mobile cloud services, big data mining, RFID data management middleware, cross enterprise ECommerce and personalized information services are selected as the main application domains for experimenting our ideas.

Mobile Data Management (1998 ~ now)

Research Abstract

With the proliferation of portable devices and wireless communication technologies, providing quality and timely information services in mobile environments has been a major challenge to both hardware vendors and information system designers. We select several key technologies as our primary research agenda which is expected to form the basis for a truly ubiquitous world. We classify mobile information service domains based on feature characteristics of the information sources and different patterns of mobile information access. By carefully examining the service requirements, we identify the dynamic data management problem that must be addressed for effective information services in mobile environments. We then devise service architectures and cost models for servicing both location independent and location dependent data. Based on the architectures and cost models, we propose dynamic data management strategies to reduce service cost and improve response time under changing user mobility and access patterns. Detail behavior mining and pattern analysis helps us in precisely capturing when and how to apply these strategies. Simulation results suggest that different strategies are effective for different types of data in response to different patterns of movement and information access.

Mobile Cloud Services (2013 ~ now)

Research Abstract

With the rapid development of hand-held devices/mobile computing technologies and the fast emerging cloud computing environments, the integration of mobile and cloud services is becoming the most promising trend in the coming years. From a recent report by Gartner, cloud computing, mobile-centric applications and interface, as well as media tablets are listed among the Top 10 Strategic Technologies. The forecast by IDC also indicates that mobile, cloud, and social networking are becoming the main stream in world IT market. ARCchart even predicts that by 2015, mobile generated contents will take up to 9,400PB (petabytes) of the cloud storage space. The common theme of these forecasts and predictions all point out the importance and high market potential of mobile cloud computing. However, the integration of the two technologies is far from straightforward. The CPU, memory, screen and other resources on mobile devices are relatively poor in comparison with their desktop counterparts. They are unlikely to be able to host all variety of cloud services smoothly. Another intrinsic characteristic of mobile networking is the intermittent disconnection and the need for disconnected operations. This is clearly against the always-on requirement of cloud services. It is therefore necessary to develop highly flexible mobile cloud service architecture and service management technologies to dynamically partition and seamless integrate the services among cloud, base stations and mobile devices. In particular, elastic service migration and seamless integration mechanisms are crucial for any high quality mobile cloud service platform. The goal of our research is to develop an elastic framework for highly dynamic service provisioning in mobile cloud environments. Service developers only need to provide necessary components for device-side mobile service interface and cloud-side service content, the framework provides automatic service compilation, multi-platform service generation and service deployment on different environments. End service users can smoothly access mobile cloud services by employing all available resources on all possible platforms including cloud data centers, base station servers, client devices, and even peer devices. More specifically, the main research topics include: With the seamless mobile cloud service environment, mobile users are no longer limited by their devices, networks and environments. Quality cloud services should be accessible to all users anytime everywhere. We use the idea of personal information management and the problem of spatial/temporal continuous media service as our test domains for technology validation and performance evaluation.
